Recessed Lighting Installation in Raleigh, NC
Planned layouts, IC-rated LED fixtures, smooth dimming, and LED upgrades for old cans, installed cleanly in finished ceilings.
Recessed Lighting Installation Overview
Recessed lights put even, clean light across a room with nothing hanging from the ceiling. We plan the layout so the light lands where you need it, cut the openings, run the wiring through the ceiling, and install LED fixtures rated for contact with insulation. Old cans can also be upgraded to slim LED lights without opening the ceiling.
-
Planned Layout
Spacing worked out for the room so the light is even, with no dark corners or glare.
-
Rated for Insulation
IC-rated fixtures that can sit in contact with attic insulation safely.
-
Dimmed Without Flicker
Dimmers matched to LED fixtures so the lights fade smoothly instead of buzzing.
When To Schedule Recessed Lighting Installation
Recessed lighting is one of the simplest ways to change how a room feels. Book an electrician if any of these apply:
- A room is dark at the edges with one fixture in the middle
- Kitchen counters or work areas sit in shadow
- You want a clean, modern ceiling without hanging fixtures
- Old cans run hot, flicker, or turn off by themselves
- Dated recessed trims you want to upgrade to slim LED lights
- You are finishing a basement or remodeling a room
Common Reasons Homeowners Book This Service
New recessed lighting in kitchens, living rooms and basements, LED upgrades for old cans, and dimmers that fade the lights smoothly.
Recessed Lighting Pricing Guidance
Recessed lighting in Raleigh, NC is priced per light. These are the factors that move the price within the range.
- Per light in an existing ceiling with attic access, LED fixture and wiring included
- No attic above, a new circuit or a new switch is confirmed on site
- Attic AccessWith an attic above, wiring is quick; a ceiling with a finished floor above takes more time.
- Circuit and SwitchLights on an existing switch cost least; a new circuit or a new switch location adds work.
- Number of LightsSeveral lights in one room share the setup and the wiring run, so each light costs less.

Water-Damaged Recessed Light Replaced
Mordecai, Raleigh, NC
A leak from the second floor sent water into the recessed lights of a Mordecai apartment in Raleigh, damaging one fixture so that it no longer delivered proper power to its lamp. We replaced it with a 4-inch Halo LED recessed light, which is now working as it should.
Recessed Lights Without Drywall Cuts
Hope Valley, Durham, NC
Installed Halo recessed lights by reusing existing holes and running wire in parallel from the ceiling fan. This avoided cutting new drywall, so the customer did not need to hire a repair person or painter.
Optional Add-Ons for Recessed Lighting Installation
These add-ons are commonly recommended with recessed lighting in Raleigh, NC based on the room and what we find on site.
LED Dimmer Switch
A dimmer made for LED loads so the lights fade smoothly without buzzing.
LED Upgrade for Old Cans
Replace hot, dated cans with slim LED lights, usually without opening the ceiling.
Slim Lights for Tight Ceilings
Ultra-thin LED lights for ceilings with little space above.
Recessed Lighting NEC Code Requirements
Recessed lighting must follow the National Electrical Code for insulation, clearances and wiring.
NEC 410.116(B)
1. Insulation Contact
Only fixtures identified as Type IC may be covered by or touch insulation; others need clearance.
Thermal insulation shall not be installed above a recessed luminaire or within 75 mm (3 in.) of the recessed luminaire's enclosure, wiring compartment, ballast, transformer, LED driver, or power supply unless the luminaire is identified as Type IC for insulation contact.
NEC 410.116(A)(1)
2. Clearance From Wood
Non-IC recessed parts must stay spaced from combustible framing.
A recessed luminaire that is not identified for contact with combustible material shall have all recessed parts spaced not less than 13 mm (1/2 in.) from combustible materials.
NEC 410.117(A)
3. Temperature-Rated Wiring
Conductors connected to the fixture must be rated for the heat they will see.
Branch-circuit wiring having an insulation suitable for the temperature encountered shall be permitted to terminate in the luminaire.
NEC 404.2(C)
4. Neutral at the Switch
Switch boxes need a neutral conductor, which most smart switches and many LED dimmers require.
Where switches control lighting loads supplied by a grounded general-purpose branch circuit, the grounded circuit conductor for the controlled lighting circuit shall be installed at the location where switches are installed.

Common Questions
Common questions from Raleigh homeowners about recessed lighting installation.
Our Raleigh electrical experts are here to help you every step of the way.
How much does recessed lighting cost in Raleigh?
Recessed lights in an existing ceiling with attic access are $160–$250 per light, LED fixture and wiring included. No attic above, a new circuit or a new switch is confirmed on site.
How many recessed lights does a room need?
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and what the room is for. A kitchen needs more light over the counters than a living room does. We plan the spacing with you before anything is cut.
Can you install recessed lights without an attic?
Often, yes. Slim LED fixtures need very little space, and the wire can be fished between joists. It takes longer than working from an attic, so it is confirmed on site.
Can you upgrade my old cans to LED?
Yes. Many old cans take an LED retrofit that fits the existing housing, and slim LED lights can replace them outright. Either way, the ceiling usually does not need to be opened.
Why do my LED recessed lights flicker?
Most often the dimmer was made for old bulbs and does not match the LED fixtures. A dimmer rated for LED loads usually fixes it.
Do recessed lights let heat out of the house?
Old non-airtight cans can leak air into the attic. Today's IC-rated, airtight LED fixtures seal the opening much better.
