Every electrical panel upgrade must comply with the National Electrical Code governing working clearances, overcurrent protection, grounding, and conductor sizing.
1. Panel Working Space
Electrical panels require minimum working clearances in front, above, and to the sides. The NEC mandates at least 36 inches of clear space in front of the panel, 30 inches wide, and headroom of at least 6.5 feet. Failure to maintain working space creates safety hazards during maintenance and emergencies.

2. Overcurrent Protection
Each circuit in the panel must have a breaker sized to protect the wire connected to it. A 200-amp main breaker protects the service entrance conductors. Branch circuit breakers must match the wire gauge — 15A for 14 AWG, 20A for 12 AWG, and so on. Mismatched breakers and wire sizes create fire risk.
