Hardwired Smoke & CO Detector Installation Overview

Hardwired smoke alarms run on your home's power, keep a battery as backup, and talk to each other: when one senses smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. We replace worn-out hardwired alarms, swap smoke-only units for smoke and carbon monoxide combinations, and add interconnected alarms where a home is missing them. You buy the alarms; we wire, mount and test every one.

  • Interconnected

Every alarm on the same signal, so a fire anywhere is heard everywhere.

  • Smoke and CO

Combination alarms for homes with gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage.

  • Tested Together

Each alarm and the interconnect tested before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Common questions from Raleigh homeowners about hardwired smoke and CO alarms.

Still have questions?

Our Raleigh electrical experts are here to help you every step of the way.

Real People. Real Answers.
We're here when you need us.
How much does it cost to replace hardwired smoke detectors in Raleigh?

Replacing a hardwired alarm at an existing location is $45–$65 per alarm, labor only. A new interconnected location with a box and wire run is $250–$400 per alarm. You supply the alarms.

How often should hardwired smoke alarms be replaced?

Every 10 years from the manufacture date printed on the back of the alarm, or sooner if one fails its test. Replace them all together so the interconnect keeps working.

Can I put any brand in place of my old alarms?

Hardwired alarms plug into a brand-specific connector. Buying the same brand, or one that fits your connectors, keeps the job quick. Another brand works too; we change the plates and connectors.

Why does my smoke alarm keep chirping?

Usually a low backup battery, or an alarm that has reached the end of its life. If a new battery does not stop it, the alarm itself needs replacing.

Do I need carbon monoxide alarms?

If your home has gas appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage, yes: outside each sleeping area. Combination smoke and CO alarms cover both at the same location.

My alarms are battery-only. Can you make them hardwired?

Yes. We add boxes and run wire to each location and interconnect them, so they work on house power with battery backup and sound together.
